The word Pathology is derived from its Greek roots pathos meaning ‘suffering’ and logia’ meaning ‘the study of ‘. Hence, Pathology is the study of the structural, biochemical and functional changes in cells, tissues and organs that underlie disease (Robbins). By convention, study of Pathology has been divided into General pathology and Systemic pathology. General pathology – and with which dental students will be primarily concerned at present stage of their studies – deals primarily with the reaction of cells and tissues to injurious stimuli – whether genetic or acquired – which are the main determinants for causation of disease. At the end of their curriculum, the students should be competent to apply this knowledge for detailed study of disorders of the oral cavity and subsequent practice of dentistry. It is situated on the fourth floor of the dental college.
