Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta (1961–2017) was a visionary educationist, politician, philanthropist, and sports administrator. Born on 31 March 1961 in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, he was the son of Babu Banarasi Das, a freedom fighter and former Chief Minister of UP. A multi-faceted personality, Dr. Gupta earned degrees in law, public administration, management, and a Ph.D. in Human Resource Management. He served as Mayor of Lucknow (1993), Union Minister of State for Steel (2006–2008), and a Rajya Sabha Member (1996–2014).
He was also a former President of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), instrumental in India's historic Olympic badminton achievements and the creation of the Indian Badminton League. Through the Babu Banarasi Das Educational Society, he founded renowned institutions like BBD University (Lucknow) and ADGITM (Delhi), impacting thousands of students every year.
Inspired by the visionary legacy of Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta, the National Service Team (NSS) of BBD University is dedicated to serving society through impactful community initiatives in education, health, and social welfare.
Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta's life was a testament to the belief that true leadership lies in serving others. Beyond his political, educational, and sports achievements, he was deeply committed to social upliftment and community welfare.
From the early days of his public life, Dr. Gupta championed causes that touched the lives of the common people—healthcare for all, education for the underprivileged, and youth empowerment. He founded and supported numerous charitable initiatives under the Babu Banarasi Das Educational Society and other platforms, ensuring opportunities reached even the most marginalized sections of society.
Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta (1961–2017) lived by the principle that true leadership lies in service to humanity. Beyond being an acclaimed educationist, politician, and sports administrator, he was a dedicated social reformer whose life's work revolved around healthcare for all, education for the underprivileged, and youth empowerment.
From his early years in public life, Dr. Gupta initiated and supported projects that directly improved the lives of thousands. Under the Babu Banarasi Das Educational Society and other platforms, he created opportunities for those most in need, with an emphasis on dignity, self-reliance, and accessibility.
This legacy is being successfully carried forward by Mrs. Alka Das Gupta – Chairperson of BBD Group, Mr. Viraj Sagar Das – President, and Ms. Sonakshi Das – Vice President, who remain committed to expanding the reach and impact of his mission.
Through these initiatives, we reaffirm his belief: "True education lies in service to humanity ."

Every year, on the occasion of Akhil Jyot, NSS organizes a Mega Blood Donation Camp in honor of Dr. Gupta's vision for saving lives. This event brings together hundreds of students, faculty, and local residents, contributing to hospitals and emergency blood banks across the city.
To promote education and literacy, NSS established the Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta Community Library at Uttardhona. This library is open to all, especially underprivileged children and youth, offering free access to books, academic materials, and learning sessions—fulfilling Dr. Gupta's dream of accessible education for all.
